On September 30, 2026, Autism Sanctuary’s Adult Group Day Program stepped out into the Charlottesville community for an uplifting morning of music, movement, and play at Pen Park: Grooving at the Treehouse, hosted by Bennett’s Village in partnership with Charlottesville Ballet and the City of Charlottesville.
Set against a bright autumn morning, this special gathering invited adult neighbors of all backgrounds and abilities to come together for an hour of accessible dance, creative self-expression, and community connection.
Creative Movement for Every Body
Gathered in a circle under the open-air pavilion, participants were led by teaching artists from Charlottesville Ballet in an adaptive dance workshop designed with accessibility and sensory well-being at its heart. With no prior dance experience needed, the session focused on physical well-being through gentle stretching, balance, mobility, and seated coordination.
From sweeping arm reaches to rhythmic swaying, the group eagerly joined in each sequence. Colorful percussion egg shakers brought an interactive musical dimension to the dance, inviting everyone to tap into the beat and share in the music. The energy under the shelter was infectious—marked by laughter, broad smiles, and enthusiastic cheers after each sequence.
Exploring The Treehouse at Pen Park
Following the dance workshop, our group explored The Treehouse at Pen Park—the celebrated first phase of Bennett’s Village’s vision for a multi-generational, all-abilities inclusive park in Charlottesville. Built so that children and adults of all mobility levels can play side-by-side, the Treehouse features wide ramp access, natural shade, sensory-rich play elements, and inclusive swings.
Our day program participants had a blast taking to the swings—both classic swings and the high-backed accessible swing—soaring under the trees and enjoying the pure sensory delight of outdoor recreation in a space intentionally created for everyone.
The Power of Community Engagement
At Autism Sanctuary, our agricultural programs provide a grounding, predictable sanctuary where autistic adults develop agricultural and vocational skills, tend the soil, care for animals, and find purposeful routine. But an equally vital pillar of our day program is active, regular involvement in the wider Charlottesville community.
Community outings like Grooving at the Treehouse break down isolation, build confidence navigating new settings, and strengthen genuine friendships. Seeing our adults shine in community spaces—surrounded by neighbors and organizations dedicated to universal inclusion—embodies our deepest mission: that every person belongs, is valued, and can thrive.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Bennett’s Village, Charlottesville Ballet, and Charlottesville Parks & Recreation for welcoming us with open arms and reminding our region what true community inclusion feels like.
